Hi everyone!!! Okay, if my fingers are short, and if I’m breathing hard, and if my pet Dragon has no idea what I’m talking about, it’s because SARAH ADDISON-FOX IS HERE ON MY BLOG AND IS LETTING ME INTERVIEW HER, I JUST, I’M JUST SO EXCITED!!!!

And really, if you have never heard of her, stop, just stop. You need to take a look at her “Allegiance” series, it is WONDERFUL!!! The fandom is real, boys and girls. If anyone is interested, I have reviewed almost allll the books on Goodreads. I think I still need to read the last one and a short. But I got it covered.

And she just released a NEW book, “Retrieve”! And I have read it and I have LOVED it!!! (If you’re wondering about the all caps, it is because I love all caps WHEN I’m excited! So there.)

So with nothing further to do, let’s get this interview on the road! Everyone let’s all clap and cheer for Mrs. Sarah Addison-Fox, the author of the fabulous new book, “Retrieve”!

About Sarah Addison-Fox:

The author Sarah Addison-Fox

Sarah Addison-Fox is a New Zealand-born misfit who writes action-packed fantasy with a smattering of punch ups, mega amounts of romance and a dash of family values. She has an astonishing amount of nail polish, has all her creative writing credentials shoved in a drawer somewhere, and has a husband who, after 28 years, can still make her blush. When she’s not working on her YA fantasy romance series’ she can be found binge watching “Mission Impossible” movies, drinking lager and eating curry.

The Interview:

Grace: “Retrieve” is out! Hooray! In your own words, without spoilers, give us a description of what the book is about!

Sarah: “Retrieve” is an action adventure story about a girl who is forced to leave her home to search for her brother. She disguises herself as a boy and is mistakenly accepted into a rough group of paid soldiers who are specialists in Retrieving. She has no choice but to stay and train as one of the new recruits.

Grace: What things inspired you to write “Retrieve”?

Sarah: I was definitely inspired by watching “Prince of Persia”. I took a few elements from the setting, the Parkour and tossed them in to a story of a battle-weary soldier returning injured and basically falling off his horse into a river. The series grew from there.

Grace: Character time! What are your favorite things about Hadley and Kade? (Without spoilers!)

Sarah: I love that Hadley has a quiet strength. She’s not ultra-tough, she can’t really defend herself the way Kade can, but she can run, she can climb and she’s extremely resourceful.

Kade is about ten thousand kinds of awesome. He’s tough. He’s lethal. He’s loyal. And he will do pretty much anything to keep his sister safe. He also has an incredibly strong moral compass and can’t help but protect those weaker than him.

Grace: If you can describe each of the characters in “Retrieve” with food items, what food items would they be?

Sarah: What a fabulous question!

Kade is definitely a toasted marshmellow. He looks crunchy and hard but crack him open and you’ll find he’s just a big smushy goopy mess that’s super sweet.

Hadley is like a flaky salmon steak. Filled with delicate bones that seem breakable, and inconsequential but are really a silent threat.

Grace: Christmas cookies! So since “Retrieve” came out a day right after Christmas, what kinds of Christmas cookies are your favorites?

Sarah: Probably shortbread. My mother in law sent us a whole lot of baking before Christmas and she included incredibly delicious shortbread. It didn’t last long!

Sugar cookies with the book "Retrieve"
These are sugar cookies; not shortbread. But trust me guys, both cookies are yummy!

Grace: What is your most favorite thing to do during Christmas or the holidays?

Sarah: Not having to nag my daughter to do her school work is always good thing!

Grace: Are you a pantser or a plotter when writing your novels?

Sarah: I’m totally a panster. I don’t plan anything out. I start each book/series with the main character’s names, a vague idea of what I want to happen and an opening scene then I let my imagination go crazy till the story is done.

Grace: Do you like to listen to music while writing your novels? If so, then what music inspired “Retrieve”?

Sarah: I love listening to music when I write. I don’t always, but when I need to create a certain mood, listening to the right kind of music helps tremendously.

I absolutely have to put my headphones on and listen to music when I’m trying to write around my kids. It’s almost impossible to get into a character’s head when my son is watching “Peppa Pig”, or dinosaur cartoons. ?

I’m trying to think about what I was listening to when I wrote “Stormers”.

I’m pretty sure that was when I discovered Epic music on YouTube. It was probably a mixture of that, and other punchy music with a solid beat. Maybe “Manafest”?

Grace: Psst! Guys, Epic music is wonderful, in case you want to know.

Grace: Random question, but what is your most favorite GIF?

Sarah: Okay, picking one favourite is really hard, but when I’m on Twitter, I do tend to use a lot of GIFS that include either “Brooklyn 99”, “Black Books” or the “IT Crowd”.

So, I’m going with this one of Super Geek, Moss, from the “IT Crowd” because it’s a fairly good presentation of all the best parts of that show.

GIF No Longer Exists! Sorry! =(

Grace: Which GIF would you use to describe your book “Retrieve”?

Sarah: I think this pretty much sums a lot of “Retrieve” up ?

Grace: What kinds of things do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Sarah: I’m pretty boring really. I’m happiest when I get to hang out with my husband and we just chill out and binge-watch TV shows or an action movie together.

Grace: Any advice to give to aspiring writers?

Sarah:

  1. Be selective in who you show your work to and take advice from.

The wrong advice or critique from someone who doesn’t write or who doesn’t enjoy the type of stories you are writing, can crush a fledging writer’s confidence.

Not everyone is going to like what you write, (e.g. a horror fan doesn’t usually read contemporary YA novels) so joining a critique group filled with writers who love the genre you want to write in, can be a good way to learn and grow as a writer.

  1. Focus on writing what makes you happy.

If you truly love your story, it comes out in your writing, and you’ll engage your reader much more.

It can take a long time to find your voice as a writer, trying out different styles, different point of views and being willing to stretch yourself as a writer by taking risks, will all help you to find the stories inside that only you can tell.

  1. Take your time learning your craft before even thinking about publishing.

I’ve heard this so many times now over the last few years. Authors who published when they were young, regretting it and having to edit and overhaul the book.

Writers get one chance at a debut, there are no take backs once it’s out there, so make your first book the best it can be before hitting publish.

This means studying story structure, the market you want to publish in and waiting until you can afford to hire an editor, a cover designer etc. before publishing.

About “Retrieve”:

Book cover of "Retrieve" by Sarah Addison-Fox

“Kade moved so he was crouching alongside her, his eyes still watching the entrance to the alley. “I’ll give you a minute to rest, then we need to move, we’ll only get one chance at this.”

White hot fear flowed through her as she gaped at him. “We’re still going to get the princess?”

Kade angled his head so she could see the hint of blood dripping from his nose. “We have a job to do. We have to adapt. No matter what happens, Stormers get the job done.””

Synopsis of:

“Retrieve (The Stormer’s Trilogy #1)”

By Sarah Addison-Fox

What if the job you took to stay alive might be what kills you?

Kade knows what it is to suffer. He knows what it’s like to lose everything and everyone around him.

His job in a Stormer Unit guarantees not just his survival in the decimated country of Azetaria, but his sister Meg’s. Even if it means facing the Numachi warriors baying for his blood, he’ll do what it takes to keep her safe.

Hadley is alone and surviving the only way she knows how. By hiding where predators won’t find her and scavenging enough just to keep her alive.

When desperation drives Hadley to search for her missing brother, she mistakenly accepts the offer of recruitment into the Stormer’s camp, only to be partnered with Kade and sent as a scout into Numachi territory.

The intimidating young Stormer may just know where her brother has gone. But can they stay alive long enough to find him?
